BSN Syntha-6 - Meal Replacement Powder
BSN Syntha-6 is balanced meal replacement powder suitable for breakfasts and daily snacks. As bedtime shake it contains too little of casein and too much whey protein and carbs. However, if you add some low fat or cottage cheese to the Syntha-6, it can be used even for bedtime shakes and smoothies.
Protein sources are whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, calcium caseinate, micellar casein, milk protein isolate, egg albumin and glutamine peptides. Syntha-6 provides body with protein matrix that digests for several hours, without spikes or drops of amino acids in the blood stream.
BSN Syntha-6 comes in numerous flavors: Banana, Chocolate Cake Batter, Chocolate Milkshake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Cinnamon Bun, Cookies & Cream, Peanut Butter Cookie, Strawberry Milkshake, Vanilla Ice Cream. Personally, I prefer chocolate flavors and I find them excellent, but vanilla and fruity flavors are good, too. But that is just me ... :)
Powder also comes in various package sizes: 2.91 lbs, 5 lbs, 10.05 lbs and 5 servings.
If you want to try Syntha-6 or want to try some of the numerous flavors, order 5 servings package - if you like it, good, order larger package, but if you don't like it, finish it and don't bother with that flavor any more. Money saved.
Macronutrient content of Syntha-6 varies slightly from flavor to flavor, but they are very similar. For example, Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor contains around 22g of protein, 15g of total carbohydrates (5g of fibers, 2g of sugar) and 6g of total fats (2g of saturated fats, 0g of trans fats) per single serving (around 47g of powder). That is around 47g of protein, 32g of carbs (11g of fibers, 5g of sugar), 13g of fats (5g of saturated fats, 0g of trans fats) per 100g of powder.
Due to protein sources and other macronutrient sources and ratio, it is obvious that BSN Syntha-6 is not so good for Post Workout Meal (PWM) shake due to digestion much slower than combination of pure whey protein and simple carbs and it is not so good for bedtime protein shake due to digestion faster than pure casein protein powders or casein protein found in low fat or cottage cheese.
However, after workout (rowing or something else), if you don't have whey protein, feel free to consume a serving of Syntha-6 - it will feed your body with steady stream of nutrients, without causing insulin spike (which is good, occasionally, for better regeneration and recovery). Many trainees even don't want to provoke insulin after cardio workouts like rowing, so it is perhaps even better not to take whey+fast carbs combination in order to lose weight - this depends, of course, on many things like trainee's age, level of physical fitness, body fat percentage, general health etc. Details that one should discuss with personal trainer and/or doctor.
Bedtime shakes and smoothies - recipe is simple, just put Syntha-6 in the blender, add some low fat or cottage cheese, some peanut butter and water and blend everything. Such smoothie contains plenty of slow digesting proteins, healthy fats and fibers and tastes like delicacy.
Recommendation - Syntha-6 is excellent, very balanced Meal Replacement Protein powder, it tastes good, causes no stomach issues, makes one satiated for longer period of time, comes in numerous flavors and sizes, mixed good in shaker without much foam etc. There are cheaper protein powders on the market, but what you pay is what you get. Syntha-6 - recommended.
If you feel very tired after rowing and you feel that you need days to recover, consider taking pure whey protein after rowing workouts, but also check your nutrition - supplements are great stuff, but real food is real food.
